Set Up a WordPress Application Password
WP Linker connects to your WordPress site via the REST API using an application password. This is secure, revocable, and takes under 2 minutes to set up.
Security Note
Application passwords are separate from your main WordPress password. You can revoke them anytime without changing your login credentials. WP Linker only needs read access to analyze your site — write access is only used when you explicitly apply link suggestions.
Step-by-Step Setup
Log in to WordPress Admin
Go to your WordPress dashboard at yourdomain.com/wp-admin and log in with an administrator account.
Navigate to Users → Profile
In the left sidebar, click 'Users' then 'Profile' (or 'Your Profile'). Scroll down to the 'Application Passwords' section.
Create a New Application Password
Enter a name like 'WP Linker' in the 'New Application Password Name' field. Click 'Add New Application Password.' WordPress will generate a 24-character password.
Copy the Password
Copy the generated password immediately — it will only be shown once. You'll paste this into WP Linker when connecting your site.
Connect in WP Linker
Enter your site URL and paste the application password in WP Linker's site connection form. Click 'Test Connection' to verify everything works.
Requirements
- WordPress 5.6 or later (application passwords are built-in)
- Administrator or Editor role on the WordPress site
- HTTPS enabled on your site (required for application passwords)
